The word sustainable has lost its spirit and sanctity. The word is too often used only on documents with beautiful layouts and designs but problems in the field continue. But offering new terminology is also not a solution. What is needed for the word sustainable to be meaningful is to realize the benefits that can really be felt and enjoyed by the community. In this context we must agree on the beginning, manageable scale of investment, strengthening and empowerment where the results can be enjoyed directly by the community.
I am impressed with one of Dr. Ken Robinson‘s statements in his book, “Finding Your Element” about the fundamental difference between a journey and a quest. Dr. Robinson said, a journey is an activity with a clear destination, which is supported by information about the distance, places of stops, as well as the costs required. While a quest refers to the impetus to ideals but has a high degree of uncertainty. All that is required for a quest is the determination and confidence to start moving. So, realizing the real benefit of sustainability for me is a quest, not a journey.
Warm regards.
